Maurice Bourgue is unquestionably one of the finest oboists in the world today. In 1966, he shared first prize with James Galway in the International Wind Competition in Birmingham and consequently won first prizes in Munich, Prague and Budapest. But even before this, in 1964, Bourgue took over from Heinz Holliger as solo oboist of the Basel Orchestra and was later chosen by Charles Munch to become the solo oboist of the Orchestre de Paris. His career as a soloist has brought him to major concert halls all over Europe, in the USA, Japan, Russia, Vietnam and China. He is a regular soloist with the Lucerne Festival Strings, all the major French orchestras, I Musici, I Solisti Veneti, the Israel Chamber Orchestra, The BBC orchestras, London Symphony, The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, the Concertgebouw, the Wiener Symphoniker, Bayerische Rundfunk, and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe with such conductors as, Claudio Abbado, Daniel Barenboim, John Eliot Gardiner, Heinz Holliger Richardo Chailly ...

Bourgue has recorded for EMI, DECCA, DGG, Nimbus, Verany, Calliope, NipponColumbia and Philips, and has received several Grand Prix de l’Academie Charles Cros. Henri Dutilleux dedicated his Diptyque: les Citations to Bourgue, who gave its first performance at the Besançon Festival in September 1991. This work was later recorded by ERATO and, like many of his previous recordings, received the Diapason d’Or. Bourgue also gave the first performances in Germany and Austria of Olivier Messian’s Concerto No 4.

A few years ago, Bourgue started ti explore the world of conducting. He has already conducted many orchestras including the New Irish Chamber Orchestra, Israel Chamber Orchestra, Ochestre de Chambre de Padoue, Orchestre Philharmonique d’Oslo, Orchestre de l’Opera de Lyon, Orchestre Philharmonique des Pays de Loire, Orchestre National d’Île de France, Orchestre Philharmonique de Montpellier, Orchestre Symphonique de Nancy, Orchestre Poitou-Charentes, Orchestre des Pays de Savoie, Ensemble Orchestral de Paris, Malaysian Philharmonic, Oriol Ensemble of Berlin, and the Tokyo Philharmonic.

In 1971 Bourgue founded the Ensemble à Vent Maurice Bourgue which performs not only in France but in major European Festivals, as well as in the USA. The group have recorded Gounod’s Petite Symphonie and Chanson et Danses op 50, wind arrangements of Mozart’s opera arias, Mozart’s ‘Gran Partita’ Serenade KV 361 and Serenades KV 388 and KV 375.

Last but certainly not least, Bourgue has for many years been active in teaching. Besides his permanent positions in the Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique de Paris and the Conservatoire de Geneve, he is the Musical Director of the Bohuslav Martinu International Chamber Music Academy. In addition, he gives masterclasses all over the world including at the Guildhall School of Music in London, The Nothern College of Music in Manchester, the Franz Liszt Music Academy in Budapest, Académie de Lausanne, Festival de Prades, the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow, the Music Center in Banff, Mishkenot Shaananim in Jerusalem, and the Academie de Musique Française in Kyoto.
