The Versatile Pianist

The Collaborative Piano Program offers an enriching and inspiring environment for developing the knowledge, instincts, and skills, of the chamber pianist and accompanist. Led by Canadian pianists Philip Chiu and Chiharu Iinuma, this two week program invites participants to explore the world of chamber music and accompaniment.

The guiding principles of the program are based on the belief that communication and adaptability are the key ingredients for fulfilling collaborative musicmaking. While we recognize that piano mechanics are an important part of the overall process, we aim instead to establish, build upon, and refine fundamentals of collaborative musicmaking of the highest standard.
Thanks to the limited class size, the curriculum is easily tailored to reinforce strengths and address the needs of each participant. Pianists will work with string players over a period of two weeks on a variety of repertoire.

In addition to extensive 1on1 lessons/coachings with worldrenowned performers and teachers, as a group we will participate in sightreading sessions, explore specific genres (orchestral reductions, show pieces, sonatas), and hold discussions on the career and development of the versatile pianist. Performance opportunities include public masterclasses and student concerts, as well as other events held at Domaine Forget.

We are very excited to welcome pianist Sam Haywood as Guest Artist for the 2016 session. Sam Haywood has performed to critical acclaim in many of the world’s major concert halls. The Washington Post hailed his ‘dazzling, evocative playing’ and ‘lyrical sensitivity’ and the New York Times his ‘passionate flair and sparkling clarity’. His acclaimed career as soloist and chamber musician (notable partnerships include Joshua Bell and Steven Isserlis) is certain to bring incredible insights to our summer session!
