After completing his studies at the Regina Conservatory with Barbara Fitzpatrick and Cameron Lowe, Blair Lofgren was awarded the President’s Gold Medal. Later, he further developed his skills at the Glenn Gould School of Music in Toronto under Thomas Wiebe and John Kadz, and received instruction from such prestigious musicians as Timothy Eddy, Laurence Lesser, Desmond Hoebig and Paul Katz. During his last year of studies, he won the school’s concerto competition and performed the Concerto in b minor of Dvorak with the Royal Conservatory orchestra in the Glenn Gould studio at CBC (Toronto).
At 24, Blair Lofgren became the principal cellist of the Orchestre Symphonique de Québec. In 2004, he was featured soloist in the creation of a work entitled Bright Sadness from Ukrainian composer Oleksa Lozowchuk. Written for solo cello, string quartet, doublebass, tenor sopilka and mixed chorus, the masterpiece utilises the rich and refined timbre of Blair Lofgren’s tone, as well as his impressive technique. Ivan Moody, composer and critic for Gramophone magazine and the International Record Review, described Blair Lofgren as an “exceptional interpreter”. Blair Lofgren currently teaches at the Conservatoire de musique de Québec and at the Académie de musique et de danse du Domaine Forget.
